We have a number of different size & weight classes of wreckers. For the automobile towing size, we use a wrecker based on a lightweight truck chassis which has a boom and can tow a weight of between 5 and 10 tons. These are best for most autos. Medium sized chassis provides the back bone of the flat bed type tow wrecker. Semi tractor type chassis provide a foundation for the heavier vehicle jobs we come across.
Boom-Tow Truck
Based on the size and type of vehicle being towed, we different types of trucks to complete the job. The Boom Truck has a boom winch which allows automobiles to be recovered from ditches, over embankments or from any scenario where the distressed vehicle cannot be approached by directly backing up.
Wheel Lift.
This evolved from the hook with chain technology. It consists of a yoke that goes under the drive train tires (front wheels on front drive cars and rear wheels on rear wheel drive) and then lifts them from the ground. This then permits the automobile to be towed without damaging the drive train.
Integrated (Repo) Lift
Also called the "snatch lift" or "quick pic" because it is commonly used in smaller tow assignments such as repossessing cars or for autos that are illegally parked. The Lift Tow system allows our operator to tow the auto without ever leaving his tow truck.
Roll Back Flat Bed
It has a flat platform behind the cab which can be rotated so the end is touching the ground. Then a hoist can pull the auto on board the platform and the flat bed is then lowered back down with the towed vehicle riding atop the bed on the back of the tow truck. The roll back flat bed is needed when the towed vehicle has sustained damage the won't allow the car to roll on any of its wheels.
Lift Bed
Not used much in the US this has a wheel lift that can be inserted under the car from the side and then lift it. Used primarily to extract parallel parked cars.

How to Avoid the "towing near me" Phone Search
The simplest way to avoid this is just "pay attention".
Use the following tips to help reduce the chance of having to google for "towing near me".
1. Tire issues may cause more automobile accidents in the US than any other single auto malady. Avoid flat tires by not driving near and around construction sites or on roads that are not maintained properly. If your newer car shows a low tire warning pull over and check it out immediately. A visual inspection should indicate if the tire is going low or the sensor battery in the valve stem is finally run out. Either way a visual check should be done immediately and if no tires look low continue on to your destination and attend to the matter as soon as possible. If there is visual evidence of a tire being low, change the tire immediately or call a tow service for help. Tire rotation is recommended every second oil change.
2. Oil & Air Filter Care. Use your head. If you see an oil spot under your car in the garage, then you should probably check your oil regularly and keep it at the proper levels. Regular oil changes are a must for maintaining proper engine health. Synthetic oils, although a little more expensive, provide extra protection for you engine from long term wear. When you change oil at the very least check the air filter if its dirty clean it or replace it.
3. Avoid engine overheating. While the hood is up during an oil change check the radiator and clean off the splattered bugs and other debris that may restrict air flow through the radiator.
4. Avoid Lock Outs. Make sure you have your keys in hand when you leave the car and lock the car by using you remote key lock while you are walking away from you car.
5. When should I replace the battery? Car batteries are generally designed to last 3-4 years. If you notice that the car is starting sluggishly go ahead and drive it and check the battery gauge/ammeter while driving. If it the battery gauge is showing a charge above 13 volts or the ammeter is showing a + charge while driving then your alternator is working properly and a serviceable battery should charge up and the next time you start the car it should not be sluggish starting. If it is stop into a car care business. They can test the health of the battery so that if it is going to let you down soon you'll be able to have it replaced before that can happen.
6. Don't overlook the other car care points. Maintenance items such as draining and cleaning the cooling system, squeeze engine hoses every now and then make sure they are supple, squealing brakes need your attention. Failed brakes will surely cause a vehicle mishap. Check the battery terminals for corrosion and use anti corrosion paste. If you engine starts to run rough then take it to a repair shop and let them run a diagnostic test to determine the problem. Better safe than sorry.

Be Aware of Tow Truck Scams
Like any business there are reputable companies and some that are not so reputable. We discovered a few towing scams that disreputable companies have been putting on unsuspecting people.
The MacDonalds Towing Scam
In areas where parking is at a premium some business owners contract with towing companies to tow vehicles who park in their parking lots and do not do business with them but walk off the property to go to other stores.
The MacDonalds Towing Scam
In areas where parking is at a premium some business owners contract with towing companies to tow vehicles who park in their parking lots and do not do business with them but walk off the property to go to other stores.
Most of these areas have signs that specifically say "Warning: Private Parking Lot - Parking permitted for McDonald's customers only. Illegally parked vehicles are subject to towing if you leave the premises . . .
What they don't tell you is that the tow truck is parked just down the street waiting for a phone call from a spotter inside the McDonalds to tell them which car's owners have walked off the property to shop elsewhere. It takes only a few minutes and the truck swoops in hooks up to the car and tows off to their lot to be held hostage for a $400 towing bill.

The moral of this story is be aware of these signs and don't think that leaving the premises for a few minutes is OK. It is also wise that you be aware of your legal rights with tow companies. You need to know what they are legally allowed to do with your car and what they are not legally allowed to do.
There are a few ways to tell if the tow company you are dealing with is a quality company. Do they provide regular training to their drivers? Do they have adequate liability insurance? What is their maintenance program for their vehicles? Are their drivers trained properly on all the equipment they utilize? See specific practices of a quality tow company here.
We are still servicing all our customers even during the Coronavirus emergency. We are practicing social distancing, wearing masks and making sure all proper cleaning and disinfecting procedures are followed completely.
