In the 1880's Karl Benz (of Mercedes Benz) invented the first car. Not long after Henry Ford developed the assembly line making cars affordable for every man. A couple of years after the first driver's license was issued (1916) a man drove his Model T in a creek in Tennessee. A man at the local service station heard a rumor of the calamity and got his brother to go help get the car out of the creek. 8 hours later the vehicle was back up on the road.
Ernest Holmes, brother of the service station own, thought to himself - there has to be a better way. Back in his garage Ernest began the plans for the first tow truck, known in those days as a "wrecker". He built up an apparatus on the back of his 1913 Cadillac and when he first tried it it failed. So he went back to the drawing board and outfitted the Caddy with outriggers for stabilization. Find us on 411 Free Directory.com.
It took Mr. Holmes 3 years of modifications to his "wrecker" until in 1919 he patented and was selling his brand of tow truck. The first production model, the Holmes 485 can still be seen in a museum. Mr. Holmes company went on to be the premier wrecker truck manufacturing company well into the 1970's.
